Review by: Hanzou

When I walked into the local arcade and saw Megaman going at it against Strider and the Incredible Hulk, I couldn't believe my eyes. Marvel VS Capcom quickly became one of my favorite arcade fighters. Where else could you have your beloved Capcom characters battle it out with some of Marvel's most popular characters for arcade supremacy? Nowhere, until now.

With the Dreamcast version, you'll be able to witness Capcom's grand creation in all its glory in the comfort of your own home. You need not worry about elbowing for room, running out of quarters, embarrasing yourself if you lose to the computer or if you're humiliated by some kid who can't even see the screen. When I heard a Dreamcast version was on its way, I was excited to say the least.

The game features some excellent animation and a great amount of detail. From walking, jumping, and running to combinations, counters, and attacks. Gambit's trench coat flows about him, Venom's suit and tongue seem to have a mind of their own, and Megaman's dog, Rush even looks great. Some of the backgrounds seemed bland, but it's hardly noticable when super heroes, missles, bombs, lasers, explosions, and bright lights are flashing all over the screen.

There are 15 playable characters to choose from at the start and several hidden characters to be found. There are also helper characters such as Thor, Arthur, Colossus, Storm, and Juggernaut, that can be called out in battle for special attacks. The controls are precise and responsive and even the Dreamcast game pad is acceptable, but I would definitely recommend an arcade stick for this one. The placing of the buttons make some of the combos and more difficult manuevers a real pain and your fingers will tire quickly.

Marvel VS Capcom's sound is like the arcade, but still leaves something to be desired. The background music isn't anything memorable and the voices could have been better, but something certainly is better than nothing. One of the things that suprised me the most about this game is the loading time. There isn't any! The game moves smoothly and characters switch seamlessly.

New to the Dreamcast version of the game are two new modes, survival and cross fever. In survival mode you choose your team and battle it out against as many computer opponents as you can handle. You only have one shot and your life regenerates meekly between matches, so you'd best be prepared before taking on this mode. In cross fever you and three of your friends can go head to head in a true tag team battle.

Even with the addition of new modes the game will get boring rather quickly, but if you are a huge fan of the Marvel universe or Capcom's VS series, it doesn't get much better than this.
