It is important to note that I am no Pokémon fan. Aside from playing the gameboy version a few hours (finding it only mildly entertaining), and catching a few episodes of the show (by accident), largely ignorant about the actual Pokémon universe am I. The above accounts for why I find Pokémon Snap to be a refreshingly simple, yet straight up fun game. In fact, while it lasts, it’s actually a blast.

The premise could not be simpler: Move around various courses on a steady progression dictated by a predetermined track, while taking pictures of the life and scenery. In this, an underlying layer of difficulty (thus: game) is present through the task of catching pokemon that move quickly, or require special coercing, quickly and while constantly moving.

Mechanics-wise, taking pictures is intuitive and using the few special items is, not surprisingly, a simple prospect. The control, while not overly plagued by a complex system in the first place, works adequately.

If seeing the Pokémon universe modeled in 3d is enough to evoke a thorough pants wetting, this is your dream game. There are certainly some interesting and sometimes even exciting things to see, thanks mainly to the use of fire and water effects, as well as many scripted events tuned to awe. While the terrain lacks peripheral objects and detail, the Pokémon are modeled well enough, and there is enough of them to keep the areas from becoming too stale in visual terms. The sound is likewise Pokémon, and spatial music matches with the flow of each level.

Pokémon Snap is a rock solid package, backed with a premise that proves amazingly entertaining, layered with enough authenticity for even a hardcore fan, and universally geared so that non-fans (I assume the majority) can have a blast as well. The blunder? It can be completed, with everything seen, in about 4 to 5 hours. A must rent for nearly anyone but the most jaded action junkie. Pokémon freaks may even find it a worthy purchase, considering the splendor of the series in full 3d.
