Genre: RPG

Review by: BlackFalcon

1997 was an excellent year for RPG fans. Some great RPG's were released including
Wild Arms, Shining the Holy Ark and Vandal-Hearts. But the most memorable of them
all had to be Square's Final Fantasy 7. Breaking new grounds with exceptional
graphics and gameplay mixed with a heart touching story FF7 was the best game (by
my standards anyway) to hit stores last year.

FF7 starts out with a long (and boring) opening sequence where the camera spins
around in the sky at the stars and zooms down into the town below. Next the camera
zooms into the first battle in the game where the main man Cloud hops off of an
incoming train. After meeting several of the members of the rebel group known as
AVALANCHE Cloud joins their effort to bomb Shinra's Mako Reactor No. 1.
Progressing through the game Cloud meets many other commrades who are willing to
help save the world.

The graphics in FF7 are the most lush and smooth ever pushed on the Sony
Playstation. All of the backgrounds are pre-rendered with lots of detail put into them.
All of the characters have a chartoony look, but are also terrific looking. The battles
are also beautiful with large bosses and terrific magic attacks and spells. The
overworld map is also interesting as it is in total 3D. You can see all of the detail put
into every nook and crany of this game, from the trees and grass to the intricate
design of town houses and shops everything looks very realistic.

The FMV (Full Motion Video) scenes bring the story together even better. The dynamic
camera likes to zoom in and out while panning around the action giving you the best
view possible. All of the summoning spells are packed with action and movement as
the camera also moves around and watchs the giants attack.

The control couldn't be any simpler. Using the circle button during battle sequences
selects the option your cursor is over, and using the D-pad you can choose any of the
spells or magic you may possess. While out of battle sequences the X button, when
held down, allows Cloud to run. Pressing the triangle button brings up a sort of pause
menu with different options to choose from.

Tunes from all sorts of instruments are implemented into the game through its great
music. Tons of music is everywhere and changes quite frequent so you're never left
with a dull quiet moment. The sound effects bring the games music score down a bit
with simple sounds anyone could make in their own bathroom.

If you've got a Sony Playstation and your an RPG freak go and buy this game. I can
hardly find a thing wrong with it. Renting this game just won't cut it, you've got to
have it for at least a week and play it non stop to find all of the goodies and secrets
packed into it.
