Review by: Carlo

On graphics, Breath of Fire 3 features well animated, detailed sprites
interacting with polygon environments using the isometric view. The spells
are the stars here as they feature great looking lighting effects straight
from the PSX effects library. The sprites are very well animated with
detail clearly showing what's happening. My only gripe here is that the
isometric view makes it kind of hard to see hidden things, even with the
"control camera" option. BOF3's a great looking game!

On sounds, the music is cool to listen and expressive during an
important event or battle. The sound effects are well done too, and they
give the expression of a spell being casted or a weapon being used. BOF3's
worth listening!

; On Gameplay, BOF3 plays very well as it features the usual elements of
RPGs as well as few new elements from BOF3 itself. Throughout your quest,
you may become student of any of the many masters you find, each with a
specialty to learn from. There's a master that specializes in making your
character get stronger, there's a master who will make your magic stronger,
etc. You can even learn the skills of your enemies during battles using the
"eye" icon from your menu, and use them against them. The Fishing Game
makes a good rest from fighting as you try to catch fish, each with it's
own usefullness. My only gripe here is that your HP climbs up slowly as you
progress to the next level. In this situation, I suggest that you get
someone to be your master. BOF3's gameplay is very good and has education
in mind.

BOF3's FunFactor is high as the story gives a solid background to your
adventures and battles. The battles are well done but not revolutionary
though. The Fishing Game gets more fun as you progress on it from fishing
spot to fishing spot. Exploration is part of the fun since the setting of
the game's interesting. The characters are fun to play depending on your
"kind of character", like Rei for example, who appeals to players who like
action oriented characters. BOF3's fun to play!

Overall Breath of Fire 3 is the best RPG of 1998 so far. With it's great
graphics, great sounds, great play and a high funfactor, BOF3 is an RPG
masterpiece that has to be played. The story's very good to look at, and
it's characters are very appealing with it's variety. However since there
are other great RPGs coming (Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Suikoden 2, Lunar,
etc.), BOF3 may soon be forgotten. BOF3 is a weakling compared to Final
Fantasy 7, but it is still good enough to be strong contender for "RPG of
1998".

While the goodness of the game lasts, go get Breath of Fire 3 now! This
game's worth your money, and you will be well entertained. Trust me on
this, Breath of Fire 3 is a great RPG!!
