SEGA It's no longer thinking, but the occasional topic still pops up. Besides, the Dreamcast doesn't really feel old enough to be called Retro.

Ten years ago today...

Ten years ago today, did anyone get a Sega Saturn? I got mine in 1995, but it wasn't on launch day.

For me, the Saturn will always be one of my most beloved consoles. Yes, the graphics are dated, yes, Sega got their ass handed to the because they made some very stupid mistakes, but this is a system that had NiGHTS, Fighters Megamix and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Most importantly, this is the system that introduced me to the internet and online gaming with the NetLink add-on.

So, thanks to Sega for daring to make a game console online, and thanks to PlanetWeb for creating the software to make it happen!

...I didn't get my Saturn in '95, I picked it up while in college around '98. I didn't have any desire to get it at launch, no doubt due to the price point there not being anything I wanted to play. I got mine (one of the redesigned one w/the good control pad) for a great deal and didn't waste anytime purchasing games (domestic and imported). It's still hooked up and still get's played from time to time. Like most Sega systems it was a niche product.

I got my Saturn in 96.

I played the hell out of games like Virtua Racer, Virtua Fighters, Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Gex, Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, Fighting Vipers, Astal, Mortal Kombat 2(probably the worst version of all the Mortal Kombat 2 ports, but I still played it), Street Fighter Alpha 2, Gex, and a bunch of other games.

But now that I look back, I can honestly say the Sega Saturn's line-up was seriously lacking compared to the PSone's library.

But with that being said. My fondness of Sega really started because of the Saturn. During the whole 32/62 bit era, I didn't play any N64/PSX games as much as I played Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, and Daytona USA.

The Sega Saturn was probably the main reason I purchased a Dreamcast. I desperately wanted some sequels to some of my favorite franchises. And while all of my anticipated sequels turned out to be huge letdowns(Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 3).

I was treated to some of the most memorable games of this generation. I'll never forget how much fun I had with games like NFL 2K1, NBA 2k1, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Seaman, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis, Marvel vs Capcom 2, MDK 2, Soul Reaver, Resident Evil:CV, Phantasy Star Online, Alien Front Online, Soul Calibur, ect.

I can't help but wonder how things would be different if Sega did a few things differently with the Saturn.

If the Saturn was a success... I wonder if Microsoft would have ever jumped into the console arena. Or better yet, where would Sony be if the Saturn outsold the PSX?

It's really pointless, but at the same time, it would be interesting if we could somehow see what the game industry would be like today if Sega would've won the 32/64 era.

Gaming might be completely different.

I have a Saturn. I can't remember when we bought it but it was when they offered the three free game deal (Daytona, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter 2). My brother and I pitched in with my Dad to buy the system but I ended up buying almost all the games, so when I moved out I took the system They didn't care anyway though.

I still have it hooked up and I still enjoy NiGHTs, Virtual On, Shining Force III, and a few other titles. Hell I still may get a few more games I always wanted but could never get. I bought Shining Force III two summers ago, off of eBay, because it was never around here when it released (due to it being so close to the end of the Saturn's life).

I dont remember when i first got my saturn, think it was in 1998. The Best game on the system is die hard, and clockwork 1 & 2 and cyberspeed way. Its a ok system, but got mad when the games started to disappear, i remember reading one of my next generation magz and i remember reading something about how tomb raider II and Ninja was not coming to the saturn and the madness continue.

The chip in the system was too complex for other compaines to handle, i heard this around the time when everybody started to leave the system.

Saturn is ok, but not the best and besides i cant find one to buy , so whatever.

I'm with Rob on this one. For me the Saturn was my most used, and most loved console! I'll always have a special place in my heart for it *sniff* all the fun I had playing VO on netlink, Duke nukem ect,,,,,, not to mention my first taste of internet porn ,,,,,,, good times! and first experiencing resident evil.

I forget exactly when I picked mine up... not long after the brother did. Bought a few games, a new TV and gave the lot away about two years ago (still have the TV).

Purchased my Saturn long after my first PSX. I originally wanted it instead of the PSX too, but that would have turned out to be a poor decision entirely. I never got to experience any of the great RPG's it had, but all the other mainstream games (Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, Panzer Dragoon) were all fun to play and looked great. I wanted to play Albert Oddyssey and Shining Force III real bad, but don't think I will ever have the chance even 20 years from now when the system will likely have a real mainstream emulator for it... Disc images being so rare. I would like to see the Saturn versions of Grandia and CastleVania: SoTN one day as well.

The Saturn was such a great machine. The graphics were sweet, it had a load of RAM, and it seemed very fast overall both in its rendering and CD load times.

It really could have been awesome were it not doomed by Sega's infamous flaws

I got my Saturn in 1996, with the 3 free games, as many did. It's still my favorite console. Games like dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Mystaria/Blazing Heroes, Shining Force 3, Guardian Heroes, and Nights, among others, made this system the best for RPGs IMO. I'll take a handful quality, unique RPGs over FF7 and dozens of "me-too turn-based crap" anyday.

Zach, if you still want to try SF3 and/or AO, PM me and we'll work something out when I get back to the states.
