Budget Title Stars

What budget titles ($20 and under) are worth picking up for my father?

He just got an XBox, and he enjoys a variety of games, except sports games. If it's too complex or involved, he won't play it.

Safe bets:

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Genma Onimusha
Max Payne 1-2
Midway Arcade Treasures 1-2
Oddworld: Much's Oddysee
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
OutRun 2
Beyond Good and Evil

Borderline due to hig involvement/complexity/difficulty and theme:

Star Wars: KOTOR
Otogi: Myth of Demons
Jet Grind Radio Future
Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams
Enclave
Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack

Praised, but I havn't tried them yet:

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I've also seen "HALO: Combat Evolved" for $24.99 a few times. That's $5 over the cut off, but it's well worth it IMO.

Seconded. Also if he like mini-games and will be playing with others, I'd suggest Fuzion Frenzy as a fun 4 player party game.

Fusion Frenzy is a fun game, as is Whacked! I got a good laugh out of that one, but most people wouldn't give it a shot.

Rainbow Six 3 - $14.99.

Prince of Persia: SOT - $19.82.

Project Gotham Racer 2. - $19.99.

Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance - $19.99.

MoH:Frontline - $19.99.

That's 5 games that retail for $19.99 or less. That would probably be enjoyed by a mature gamer.

Play Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance ASAP.

Then you'll want to play the sequel, which can probably be had for $30 at some store...or maybe <$20 online.

If you have 2+ players, "Fusion Frenzy" is the motherfuckin shit. 4 players is off the chain, and goes down as the best party game ever, IMO.

Especially when you use custom soundtracks. DDR mixes are the best, because the songs are almost exactly the same legnth as the minigames.

I'll be picking up Fuzion Frenzy then. If it's simple enough, my mom might play it too.

I'll probably also pick up Baldur's Gate and one of the Midway collections.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. My father is tough to buy games for.

Fuzion Frenzy is as simple as it gets for a new gen game. Almost every game uses 1 thumbstick and 1 or 2 buttons. I can only think of a couple games that use 4 buttons. I've had this game since launch and it is great imo.
BG: DA and Midway are good picks as well.

And syn...it blows all the mario party games out of the water.

Arrow ...is Fusion Frenzy really that good? I'm guessing it's kind of like the Mario Party

"Fusion Frenzy" is a simple, to the point party game with a cutesy cast of futuristic urbanites, and a bit of "Power Stone" thrown in for good measure.

There's a maximum of 4 players with the option to play either 2, 4 or all 6 different game zones that make up the city (of the future) per game. Each zone contains 3 randomly selected mini-games (of at least 10 per area) and a final 4th round melee competition per zone called a "Fusion Frenzy".

In each mini-game the players compete in games that match the theme of the area, or "zone", that they're in:
  1. Military Base (minitank combat/races, minifighter-jets, etc.)
  2. Power Station (Dodging uranium fuel rods, racing on electrified treadmills, etc.)
  3. The Coliseum (Tron'esque light-cycles, hover cars, "American Gladiators" cageballs, etc.)
  4. The Water Front (Kick ass miniboat races/combat, etc.)
  5. Downtown (DJ matches ala DDR button sequencing, exterminating bugs, etc.)
  6. Outland (Vehicle combat, demolition/bomb throwing games, etc.)

The first, second and third place winners of each area receive "orbs" in the colour of their character (5, 3 or 1 depending on your place) which are added to their total per zone, with 3 "free" ones given to all players before the "Fusion Frenzy". This is where it gets sort of interesting...

Each of your gems are worth 10 points alone. You have an option to "bank" them for their face value, which would be added to your running game total, or to "risk" as many of the orbs won in that zone each time before you 'Frenzy. During a Fusion Frenzy the players all try to grab as many randomly placed white (neutral) orbs as possible, and slam them into the 2 designated "goals". Also, depending on how many orbs you risked, they will randomly release orbs in the colour of your player onto the playfield for you to try to grab and score additional points with. No other player can pick up your coloured orbs, but once you grab it, it turns white in your hands. This means that anyone can attack you to "steal" the orbs you're holding.

The point of "risking" your orbs at all is that they are worth more total points when they are collected and goaled many at a time. 1 orb alone is worth 10 points in a goal, but if you slam 2 it's worth 30 points, and 3 (max you can carry) is worth 80 points per goal. However, the longer you take trying to collect multiple orbs the more vulnerable you become, because orbs weight you down slightly, making you an easier target for others to attack.

The more orbs you risk, that's the more orbs you'll get "dibs" on (since no one can grab your colour), and since the flow of released orbs (of any colour) per Frenzy is limited to only so many on the screen at a time, you can dry up the number of neutral (white) orbs released for others by risking a ridiculous amount of your own (this pisses my wife off, because it's a cheap tactic to keep the weaker players down).

The players are unique in look/voice only. They all have the same speed, attack power and agility. The only thing that differs is some characters (like dub) have a faster "scoring" animation. I don't think that this was intentional, but it can make a teeny-tiny bit of difference in the heat of a 'Frenzy. Everyone has a standard light attack (3 hits to knock down an opponent/steal their orbs) and a limited heavy weapon attack (one hit to knock down/steal) that's usable for a few seconds if you happen to grab the appropriate icon. You can also jump kick opponents, like on "Power Stone" (only it doesn't knock them down -- you have to follow throw with two more attacks).

There's a number of power-ups (wide shots, speed boosts, heavy attack and shields) booby-traps, random "team-ups" (co-operative challenges) and vehicles that help to keep the competition fresh, and the challenges unpredictable. The character designs are actually pretty cool, with a suprisingly generous number of minority and female characters to choose from, and all of the players are bratty and spoiled, so they talk a lot of shit when they're on top, and bitch at/threaten others when they get fucked over.

What's weird is for some odd reason or another they decided to threw Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez into the Mix. She's VERY OBVIOUSLY the character model for "Gina" (the blue player). Go figure.

Ultimately, people either love "Fusion Frenzy" or think it's boring and/or lame. I suggest you play the demo that came on 90% of the first generation XBOX titles (I'm assuming you have HALO) to get an idea if it's something you and your friends, and perhaps the missus, would like to play. It's one of the few XBOX games that takes advantage of the custom soundtrack feature, but you MAY experience lock ups or skips using it IF you have a Thomson drive. It's one of the few launch titles that the wife and I have never stopped playing.

My friends and I found Fusion Frenzy fun at first. But grew tired of it after about 30 minutes of playing it. Even with it's 25+ mini-games, it got boring very fast.

Yeah, 'Plus is on XBOX and PS2, while Gamecube has the older, weaker collection with a few less games. Same with Monkeyball. The 'cube keeps getting fucked that way.
