RGD-03/24/03-Golden Axe-Genesis

I probably played more of Golden Axe in the arcade than I did on the Genesis, but they were basically the same game.

Typical side scrolling beat em up type game. Three cahracters to choose from, Man, Woman, and Dwarf. A used magic, B was attack, and C was jump. Pretty basic game. You could also ride large animals (like fire breathing dragons) for a limited amount of time, as long as you didn't get knoocked off by enemies (which seemed to be their goal when you were on an animal).

Classic Sega game, even if it's just a side scrolling beat em up.

The Genesis version was terrible.

Damn sloppy conversion. It's one of the two console games I'm aware of that actually lock up.

Thumbs down Genesis version. . .

Horrible, terrible, awful, shitty game. Everything from the box art down to the choopy game play. I loved the arcade version, so you can imagine how much I hated this trash.

Altered Beast was a better arcade conversion than this game was and it was a pack-in. Don't even get me started on Golden Axe II (arcade) or Golden Axe: the Duel for SEGA Saturn.

You want Golden Axe? Play the original classic on M.A.M.E.

Exclamation

I do as well. Im fact, I think that I have it in both cartridge and SEGA CD format, both SEGA Classics 6-packs. I have it on PC CD ROM as well, as well as the ROM for the Genesist Emulator.

I have too many of these damn shitty things!

I've never played the arcade version, but I have played the Genesis version and love it. I don't really understand what's so bad about it, but I guess I would if I played it in the arcades.

Yes, you most certainly would. I'd bet my shitty copy of Genesis Golden Axe on it.

I've downloaded a mame Golden Axe rom but can't seem to get mame working properly. I'll double click the program, then a small dos window will quickly flash up on the screen. I'm probably overlooking something simple, any suggestions?

Yeah, try a different version of M.A.M.E. Perhaps a MAME32 version for Windows (though I doubt that any 32 versions are more functional then DOS versions).

BTW - Have you ever successfully ran MAME before?

Do you know if you're running DOS MAME (I'm assuming) or MAME32 for Windows? And also what version. If you don't know than I'll suggest getting the latest version of MAME32. If you need help setting it up I'll try to talk you through it. Might be something simple like files in the wrong place.

I think before it was a DOS version. I'm now using Mame 32 and I got it working. Is there a way to use a gamepad with this? I can map different buttons on the keyboard but i can't seem to get my gamepad working. Some of the games I've downloaded won't work. I'll run "audit all games" and window will pop up saying certain files are not found. What's that all about?

Arrow Yes, you can use a game pad with Mame32

The control pad is turned off by default. To turn it on:
  1. Open the MAME graphic user interface (gui) and click on the "Options" tap at the top of the interface.
  2. Select: "Default game optons" from the drop list.
  3. Click the "Controllers" tab.
  4. Check the "Enable joystick input" check box
  5. Apply the changes by clicking the apply button.

You're control pad should now work with MAME32.

One reason that certain games don't run is because not all of the roms work with that version of MAME. In fact, No version of MAME runs all roms 100%.

Also, you may not have the parent ROM of a certain game(s). Some games have serveral versions (for example: Galaga, Fast Shooting Galaga and Galaga Bootleg - all of these are the same game with the only difference being slight programming alterations/mods) and in an effert to save space only the different files are included in "cloned" versions of a game, so you need to parent ROM, that is, the original ROMset to run them.

In MAME you can't run Pac-Man with out having the Puck-Man romset because it's the parent ROM with all of the "original" game files.

Lastly, it could also be a bad dump. If you visit mame.dk they should be able to tell you if the game is working (as well as the sound quality and colors) when you enter the name of a game in their search engine.

Some versions of MAME can run certain games that other versions can not. And some versions of MAME need an updated ROMset for certain games. mame.dk will also let you know if you need a NEW version ROMset to certain games with the newer version of MAME.

I got it working now, thanks for the help Aeon. After playing Golden Axe on mame, there's certain things I like better about each version. I like how in the mame version the bodies remain on the ground after defeating them. The genesis version seems to have better graphics. As for sound, in the mame version it often makes a horrible scratch sound when certain sound effects are emitted. I'm assuming that's only due to less than perfect emulation. As a whole I think mame is great, I started building up a collection of my favorite games from the past. It makes me want to start building my own mame arcade cabinet. Since, I'm living in a dorm and I have little money, I can't start that yet. Maybe in the future...
