Post First "OMG" VG Experiances

Having lived in the arcades during their hay day (79' thru 84') I've seen a lot of "cool" did you see that events when your first played a particular game.

Do you guys recall any first "OMG" Video Games experiances?

Three that sticks in my mind.

Robotron 2084: Wave 9 and every 9 Waves there after.

OMG - I Warped into in center of Wave 9, subsequently I'm surrounded by 81 grunts. So many grunts, that the entire screen in virtually filled with seemly no way out. As you progress to the Wave 9 like stages, Robotron drop Hulks, Tanks and Spheroids into the mix.

Getting through these stages untouched (on one guy) gave me a gaming buzz like no other Wave (including family/brain) in Robotron 2084.

OMG2 - Seeing the Invisible levels on Tempest.

Getting to play on a new color was one of Tempest coolest features. Working through the different colors we would guess what the next color would be.

After "Light Neon Blue" came Invisible! All you could see were spikes and enemies. The shock of not being able to see the stage layout no matter how many times I's played it before caused almost immediate death. I had to practice, These Invisible stages were without a doubt the hardest gaming experiance I ever had the enjoyment of playing. Play Neon Green was icing on the cake.

The Invisible theme made it into other Atari coinops to. Gravatar's planets landscape were invisible at the higher levels as was certain Major Havoc level layouts.

OMG3: Seeing Dragons Lair for the first time. Playing a cartoon how awesome was that back in 1982.

I suppose my first gaming shock came when I first played video games in 1990. I heard about them all the time and how cool they were but I didn't have it. Super Mario Brothers was a great game. My second OMG experience was when I got The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES. It was 1993 (it hit the million seller list) and just the graphics, the golden gameplay, etc. it was probably the best gaming experience I ever had at the time. It still remains to be the best in the series. My third OMG was when I played Virtua Fighter 2 in the arcades. VF1 was good but this was jawdropping in graphics, gameplay, and of course, fun.

I'll be damned if I remember the name of it, but seeing the first game that employed a moving player area was pretty intense. I think it was a Sega game , but that was a long time ago.

Super Mario Bros was an OMG experience for me. Just the whole game. Finding secret 1Up mushrooms, trying to get every coin, warping, the whole thing just put me in awe. Mario 3 got a similar reaction from me.

Other then that I don't recall many others.

It was probably R360. Really, the only thing I remember is that it was on the boardwalk, and while everyone was playing pinball, skeeball, or some arcade-type cabinet game, there stood a giant.

This giant looked like a pod on huge hydraulics. It went nearly as high as the ceiling. Of course, I was pretty young then and my memory could be exaggerating it a little

It was a game called Time Zone. I believe it was six discs. I found a game that size quite astonishing.

I'll also toss Dragon's Lair out there.

The Bloater Story
Every band has a story and every story has a beginning. Our story begins in 1995 at a party in the courtyard of Ramsey Hall, London. After several rounds of Bloody Maries and Bovril Crisps, the party moved inside. By the end of the night, the three men were wearing women's dresses, the woman had an empty closet, and Bloater was born.

1) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that came with my genesis. Mind you I never had a console before my Genesis, and I had hradly played any games.

2) Battle Arena Toshinden for PSX. The only games I had played with polygons was Starfox for SNES and I went to my friends house (he rented PSX) and I couldn't believe my eyes. I remember sitting there for like 20 mins just thinking...wtf..this has to be a movie. Back then the system looked so futuristic

I think mine was Super Mario Kart, I never owned a vg system myself to psx cause my parents never wanted me to have one. I used to always go to friends houses and play super mario kart for hours and hours, and it never never got old.

My OMG experience would have been when I first saw Mortal Kombat. All I remember seeing was red and seeing those fatalities were amazing to me. I remember I couldn't stop talking about Raiden's and Sub Zero's fatalities.

Another OMG experience was when I first saw Killer Instinct. Combos galore!

Star Fire One by Exody

This was back in the late 70's right after Star Wars became a mega-hit. I'll never forget the first time I saw that beauty in the arcade. A big sit-down booth, open on the sides. It was a pure Star Wars rip-off right down the enemy ships that looked like "H's".

My mom used to drop me off in the arcade while she went shopping. I'd burn through the quarters she gave me, then go around pestering adults for more. "Mister, can I have a quarter?" I was like a little crack-addict.

Amazing game.

(BTW: I'm not sure if those pics are from the version I played. If I remember right it was B&W not color and the resolution was much lower. But it's a similar look.)

DG... Star Fire was in color; if memory serves me ships were bright red, blue, yellow & green hues with a star field background.

I remember playing Star Fire in a Red Baron like sit down cabinet a lot at Circus Circus Arcade on the Strip back in the day. It was most definitly one of the first OMG games for the time period.

It was a pretty crappy Poker game for the Commodore, looking back now. But it was my first experience with an eletronic game, and I was thrilled... played it to death. There were plenty other games, but Poker is the only I can recall.

Others include Need for Speed 1 on the PC, and popping in Tekken for the first time on PSX. There were many great games inbetween but can't remember any that stopped me cold.

Mortal Kombat - It was really the first time I had seen digitized characters...and the fatalities just drew me in, heh..

Sonic The Hedgehog - My first experience in the 16bit era...Gorgeous game. Bright colors, hella fun

Star Fox - first 3D game I had ever played

Killer Instinct - Probably the most stunning fighter I played in the 16 bit days. Graphics were amazing, as were the fatalities, combos...everything about it was just awesome...

Battle Arena Toshinden - I played this game forever at KB Toys. I had never seen 3D done so..completely...it was amazing. Then I bought my Playstation, which came with Toshinden packed in...I was in heaven

Virtua Fighter(arcade beta) - I went to Disney World back in 92-93 or so, and there was this massive Sega show at the Epcot Center. I payed 5 bucks to play 1 match of Virtua Fighter...I thought it was amazing...even though I only lasted through 2 rounds, lol..

San Francisco Rush - I thought it was a great racer at first, then I crashed into somebody and they flew head on into a building and exploded. I was like "HOLY SHIT WAS THAT COOL!". Still one of my favorite racers ever...

Wolfenstein 3D - Ah, the days when an entire game could fit on a floppy disk

Street Fighter II - this was the first fighting game I ever played. I couldn't stop playing, it was so fuckin cool

I've been looking over this thread since it started, and I've wanted to reply but couldn't. I've been playing games since I was a wee lad and I've enjoyed ALL of the good ones. It was hard to think of my first OMG game.

But I think I figured it out. S.T.U.N. Runner was the first game that really grabbed me and refused to let go. I had been playing games for years before I found that arcade cabinet in an old crappy motel arcade while on vacation. I was glued to that game. I must have spent every cent I had with me on that damn game. After that, I was no longer some kid who played games. I was a gamer.

I can think of other OMG experiences since then, but that was my first.

off the top of my head...the first one that comes to mind was easily DRAGONS LAIR..

STAR WARS ARCADE
STUN RUNNER

are other arcade games...

but must of my OMG expereinces have come from home gaming....

UNREAL was probably the biggest and baddest one in years

SONIC for the genesis

SEWER SHARK for the SEGA CD....yea the game sucked but at teh time it was FMV and i thought it was cool....

then after 3 more games JUST LIKE THAT i finally realized how much they sucked

WING COMMANDER 3 for the 3DO is another one...and still i think a great game and the best in that series

TOMB RAIDER on my SATURN....i still think that was an incredible game...and was my first real 3D game

I spent a long time watching big kids play Pac man on the Commadore 64. They'd rarely let me play. those big kids were probably only about three feet tall, but they looked huge to me.

I've had humdreds of OMG experiances in my life. Every new Mario, Zelda or Finnal Fantasy game had me thinking "whoa, I had no idea it could get this good.

Imagine what it will be like in 20 years when the PS2 is outdared. (I'm starting a new thread on this).
