[Joystiq] Billy Joel coming to Rock Band 3 out of spite

There are plenty of reasons artists license their music for a rhythm game. There's money, certainly, and notoriety. But what about scorn? For Billy Joel, it was more than enough reason to license a dozen or so of his songs to Rock Band 3. Here's his account from USA Today:
"I've never allowed my music to be used in a game before," but an Entertainment Weekly review of NBC's The Office changed his mind. Alluding to an episode in which characters mention a Rock Band featuring Billy Joel, "the critic wrote something like, 'God forbid that ever should happen.' So I called my people and said, 'Get me (on) that Rock Band game.' Then I wrote the critic, saying that every time I get a check, I'll give him a little nod."
We're assuming the songs will cost money, but we'd submit that reading the above story and knowing we'll never do anything remotely that cool is a dear enough price to pay.Billy Joel coming to Rock Band 3 out of spite originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 17:40:00 EST. His music alone is worth the price of the keyboard add-on.

George to everything in this thread. Love me some Billy Joel music, and RB3 is the perfect place for it, what with the keyboard and all.

Yeah. LA'inos. So full of themselves. Don't they know not to mess with New Jersey?

EDIT: Also, I ddin't know RB3 had a keyboard in it. Will the keyboard be available as a stand alone item for purchase? That's what I learned most as a child.

You can buy the keys alone or with a bundle with the game. 80 for just the keys and 140 with the game.

If you buy the keys and can progress to expert level, I'll let you join my band, "Kick to the Junk"

I get the whole guitar aspect of Rock band and GH. Its a simplfied guitar. But it gets kinda murky with keyboards and drums. Couldnt you just lean play a real keyboard or drum just as easily?

Even on pro level, what you're doing isn't exactly authentic.

Examples: on piano, you're only playing the right hand portions of these songs, and not involving any foot pedal. On drums, how hard you hit the drum doesn't factor, nor is it anything near a complete kit.

Besides, it's fun to play with friends. Somebody has to play guitar, and that shit ain't easy to learn.

Pro drums are essentially a 8 piece set possibly 9 if you add a second kick pedal. It's not charted for double bass though.

I'd prefer that they chart it for hi-hat pedal, that's more common than a double bass.

You will be able to, but only in freestyle mode.

As far as the keys go...

Quote:
By default, you'll use five keys on the keyboard, starting at middle C. For songs that don't have any keys to play, you can opt to play guitar or bass parts on the keyboard controller. Similarly, if you don't have the scratch to pick up a keyboard, you can play keyboard parts on guitar or bass. Of course, there are more than five keys on that keyboard. It covers a full two octaves. And if you turn on "pro mode," you'll have to play a lot more than just five keys. When you enable it on the keyboard, the display changes to show more keys, forcing you to essentially play accurate keyboard parts on its highest setting

Snagged the new cymbal expansion and paid off the game. On vacation next week, so you know what I'll be doing!

Nope, Mr. Joel is from New York.

Which explains his chronic insecurity.

Ah, I've seen those mods, looks like they've slimmed them down some and cleaned them up a bit. Used to look so big and bulky.

They are still kinda heavy and with the added weight and the cymbal weight, i had to add PVC tubing to keep them from sliding down (you can see them in the first pic) I had to find my optimal height and just cut them from there.
