Here is a game that takes everything I hate about current gen gaming....its too easy, lots of QTEs, lots of cutscenes, a confusing overwrought story......and makes it into something awesome. This has been one of my favorite games of the year. Its like God of War, but with all the stupid removed and replaced with a mixture of growth hormones and PCP.
Asura is a permanently irritable sumbitch, and one of seven superpowered guardians of the planet. For reasons unclear, his fellow guardians declare themselves to be gods, kill Asura's wife, kidnap his daughter and send Asura to hell. The game is about Asura's revenge and his considerable temper.
And oh boy, does he ever lose his temper. At some point in the game, Asura completely LOSES HIS SHIT and has what might be the most epic meltdown in the history of meltdowns. Its glorious, I tell ya.
I think the appeal of Asura's Wrath is that its so balls out over the top, ridiculously oversized, never taking itself too seriously or ironically. It doesn't overstay its welcome, either. You can probably finish the game in an all day session, then replay certain parts to get a higher score (and apparently unlock the "true" ending).
Normally....I couldn't like a game that is more like an interactive anime with bits and parts of game sprinkled in. But AW kept me thoroughly entertained all the way through. Its a good purchase for under $20 or even better a weekend rental.
