Jak 3 and Ratchet and Clank 3 coming this fall.

Quote:
Jak 3 and Ratchet and Clank 3 Confirmed for Fall
By David Radd -- News Writer
Published 9:24 AM CDT, February 24, 2004

Sony Computer Entertainment America announces that the two critically acclaimed platformers will receive sequels by the end of this year...

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today that the popular and critically acclaimed Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank series, created and developed by Naughty Dog, Inc., and Insomniac Games respectively, will return exclusively to the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system in Fall 2004.

"We are delighted to continue our relationship with two of the most talented and imaginative development teams in the industry," said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Consumers want more from traditional platform games and Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games have made strides to implement technology innovation in order to raise the industry standard and invigorate the genre. The upcoming sequels will continue to push the boundaries as both teams incorporate revolutionary gameplay elements."

The announcement follows a successful retail season as Jak II and Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, last year's sequels to the "Greatest Hits" titles Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Ratchet & Clank, continue to flourish as top selling titles since their launch.

"Both Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog continue to push the envelope with each game that they bring to the market," said Andy Reiner, Executive Editor of Game Informer, the world's largest multi-platform gaming magazine on the market today. "The level of craftsmanship that goes into each project truly is remarkable. I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves this time!"

As both franchises have sold through to consumers more than one million units internationally since their inception, Sony Computer Entertainment America has proven that the platform genre continues to prosper. Demonstrating this, Jak II was chosen by PlayStation Magazine (PSM) for Game of the Year, Best Character Design and Best Story, it was awarded Action Game of the Year as well as tied for Game of the Year by PSE2 and it received PLAY Magazine's Hybrid Game of the Year. Jak II also was honored with an IGN Editors Choice Award for 2003, as well as IGN's pick for Best Graphics.

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, was honored by IGN, Cinescape and Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) as the Best PlayStation 2 Game of 2003. The game was included in PSM's Top 10 Games of 2003, was chosen by TechTV's "X-Play," GameSpot and the Dallas Morning News as Best Platformer of the Year, received an IGN Editors Choice Award for 2003 from IGN and was nominated by 1up.com for Game of the Year. PLAY Magazine labeled the title as both PlayStation 2 Game of the Year and Action-Shooting Game of the Year, and the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News included Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando among its Top 10 Best Games of 2003
GamerFeed.

Heh, I still haven't bought Ratchet & Clank 2, nor Jak 2. Guess i'll just wait till they become greatest hits before I pick them up.

Let's hope they don't watered down like the Crash franchise.

I'm still pissed about that. Crash 1 was platforming heaven.

And Sly 2.

-----------------------

Y'know, I was playing the Crash: Wrath of Cortex demo (which sucked badly) just last night, and I started thinking, Nintendo franchises don't come out every year (or nearly so, like many things of diminishing quality). Sure, there were, what, three Marios on SNES, but by and large, they space them out really well -- almost TOO spaced out at times (I really wanted a Metroid on N64).

By the time we get X Fox out, there won't be time for another in this gen, so our sequel will have to be the next, and then we'll leave it alone for a while, or for good. We may even do 1-3 other things before we get to a sequel (although I'm actually keen on the sequel now, which came to me in a dream). I'd rather pace myself like Nintendo. Try lots of different things and really do a major update with something new to add when we revisit an old property.

It could just as easily be franchising regardless of genre. Then there was the apparently disappointing performance of Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil in the same genre.

PoP was NOT a platformer.

Pretty close to it. I wouldn't call the release of these games "milking" since it's no more than we saw of Mario in the NES days. But this fall season is looking incredibly crowded as is (thanks in large part to 2003's heavy hitters being delayed 25x times over) so it could be a premature death of both franchises if the release timing is poor. I like Ratchet & Clank more than anybody but if it comes out in November with Halo 2, MGS3, Gran Turismo 4, and Half-Life 2, it's gonna get the "when it's $20" treatment.

Amen. It's Soul Reaver with acrobatics. And BG&E is an adventure game through and through.

Don't forget the inevitable 3 for 2 at TRU.
