[Joystiq] Games for Windows Live is dying, we check the life support of games

Microsoft announced last year that Games for Windows would shut down its marketplace features on August 22, 2013, signaling the beginning of the end for the service. Never quite achieving its desired critical mass, GFWL handled DRM, achievements, and ...

Shocking!

I recently purchased Shadowrun (the FPS) for the PC. (It was $1.50, get off my back.) Installing and getting it to run it was a nightmare. There was forum reading to find obscure downloads and patches that had to be run just so. Then once I got it running, getting my XBL profile loaded took like 7 attempts. Then it had to do a title update, which took a few tries.

Gee, I wonder why nobody liked the service.

Took me forever to get Fable 3 to run. Now I'm not sure if it will continue to run when they shut it down.

I never purchased or downloaded a single Games for Windows title.

I don't know much about the DRM, and if there's a standard across all the games, but it'll suck if when the service goes down none of the games work anymore. Or even if some of them don't (but others do). It'd be nice if there was an update to strip out the DRM, so people could keep their games... but that'd shock me. This is one of the reasons I hate digital only games (if there's DRM).

Many developers are patching their games to remove GFWL DRM in preparation for this. Those that don't take this step will see their games stop functioning after 7/1/14.

Joystiq is keeping a list.

I have three games on the list (I've intentionally avoided GFWL games when possible). Arkham Asylum and Arkham City supposedly have removed the DRM (so I'll run them to test), and it seems MS is content to let Fable 3 die as opposed to updating it.

That sucks. I got Fable 3 for the Xbox 360 (as part of the free Gold games), so here's hoping Xbox Live sticks around longer than GFW!

And this is why I hate PC DRM. If a game is available on GOG, that's where I get it as all of their games are 100% DRM free. I trust steam next, as they've promised to automatically strip Steam-related DRM from all games should their service ever go down for good (though we'll see if they can actually make good on that).

But many games sold on Steam have MULTIPLE forms of DRM. All games on Steam have basic steam-related DRM. Some have both GFWL and SecuROM. Others have one or the other. Final Fantasy 7 PC, for example, has both Steam DRM and Square's cloud-based service. So you're better off just buying direct from Square to reduce your exposure to DRM.

Arkham Asylum and Arkham City have had GFWL removed on Steam, All users got upgraded to GOTY Editions as well. I had to keep after WB Games to provide me a Steam Key for AA Retail Disc, but they finally delivered.

Well fuck me. Shadowrun is going to die on July 1. Actually, fuck Microsoft.

My only issue is Fable 3. Thankfully, Steam will maintain the client download for all users who purchased it. You can also use a GFWL remover to strip GFWL, and a keygen to play it (paying to pirate, this is ridiculous). The DLC is another matter entirely. That's gone as of 7/1/14.

If this occurs, I'm done with Microsoft. I will go to Linux or pirate their OS before I ever send them another dollar. Fuck them.
