[Joystiq] Tomb Raider sales broke even by the end of 2013

Though publisher Square Enix originally lamented its lower-than-expected post-launch sales figures, Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider earned back its development costs by the end of 2013, executive producer Scot Amos told Eurogamer this week."By the ...

It took 4 million units sold for them to break even? Sounds like there's some Hollywood Accounting going on here. Or production managers and producers need to be fired.

Not quite on the level of Shenmue, but 4 million to break even is crazy.

Part of it is probably 750k-1million were $60 sales.....

I bet a good 2 million were less than $20...hell you can buy it on amazon today for 360 for $10..

Game was awesome, but it's sad to see they struggled to break even...makes you realize how hard it is to make a game today and why we're starting to see much fewer games.

It's all the porn actresses that they hired for voice acting. When I watched the preview for this game when it was shown off, all I could notice was the erotic noises Lara made every time that she was hurt or exerted herself. Seriously, I got the impression from that first trailer/teaser/gameplay, whatever, that she was about to get raped.

Development budgets for AAA games have just skyrocketed.

Here's a quote from Ubisoft on Watchdogs...

Quote:
At E3, Stéphane Decroix, the executive producer of Watch Dogs, kindly bring up the subject with a "beyond 50 million euros. (68 million USD)"

Currently, more than 600 people working to finish the game in time. There was one year, it was over 130. That says it all. A total of 6 home studios are working on it. If the budget exceeds € 50 million for development, is not counting on marketing, which can double the total budget.
Destiny...

Quote:
Destiny - $140 million - The leaked initial development contract for the game authorized payments totaling up to $140 million to cover Bungie's development and limited marketing efforts (ViDocs and other marketing assets) prior to the game's beta. As the contract also specifies, Bungie's marketing costs — limited to $1 million — are separate from Activision's own marketing expenses on Destiny.
GTA5's budget

Quote:
GTA V had a record breaking budget of reportedly $260 million. Now, it has come out that over 1,000 people worked on the game’s development.
Star Wars: The Old Republic

Quote:

A new feature story at the Los Angeles Times recounts development on The Old Republic and reveals some nuggets of information about the space-bound MMORPG. According to the Times, The Old Republic cost $200 million to develop, well above the $80 million forecast by Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter last May.

The Times reports the game was created over the span of six years by 800 developers on four continents. BioWare cofounder Greg Zeschuk told the paper, "Coordinating it all is like teaching elephants to do ballet."
Halo 4

Quote:
Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Studios recently confirmed Redmond has spent more money developing Halo 4 than any other game title they ever made. "Absolutely," Spencer said. "Nothing [else is] even close."

Halo is of course Microsoft’s most important game, and according to estimates it’s a three billion dollar franchise for the company. There’s no estimate to what Halo 4 cost yet, but as Cinema Blend notes, "We can easily guess that it’s probably over the $100 million mark given all the promotion that’s gone into the game."
Gran Turismo 5

Quote:
Speaking to the magazine, Polyphony Digital head Kazunori Yamauchi said the budget for the game is around $60 million.
So add these huge game budgets, with the fact I've read after everyone is paid (store, shipping, etc) a publisher will receive about 37 dollars out of the 59.99 a game retails for. It all adds up to a lot of copies having to be sold before a "AAA" game even breaks even.

Watch Dogs isn't going to be anywhere close to a 10. At all.
