Kotaku - Statetris: Tetris With Territories [Hot Flashes]

Here's another one of those games that actually is boring as shit, but because it's geography, it preys on your need to show that you're not some bumpkin and you've either visited countries other than your own or at least know where they belong. It's Statetris, which challenges you to fit together, Tetris-style, the countries on two continents, or states in nine nations, or — here's the big WTF — all the counties in South Carolina. For those wondering, yes you will be asked to drop into place tiny ass San Marino, Andorra, Malta, etc., if you play Europe. And if you play on hard setting, where the territories are not identified, I don't know how you can get it right. Anyway, if you won your school's geography bee, you'll love Statetris. Or not.

Kotaku - Sunday Timewaster: Meat Boy [Hot Flashes]

Edmund McMillen (of Aether, Gish, and the game that shall not be named) is back with Meat Boy, a challenging little game that involves the titular blob of meat trying to rescue Bandaid Girl in a variety of levels. It took me a while to actually look at the game, since the designer woke me up a few nights in a row via IM asking me to take a look at it — I hold a grudge when it comes to my sleep being interrupted -- but I've spent some time with it and it's worth a looksee if you're in the mood for a challenge on a Sunday afternoon. Controls are simple, the game is difficult, but you can skip two levels per group -- so if you really get stuck, don't despair.

Joystiq - The Joystiq Free Game Club: Hunted Forever

On its surface, Hunted Forever is a very simple game: You're madly scrambling as you attempt to avoid a vicious laser-and-missile toting A.I. Dig a little deeper though and you'll find ... well, it's still pretty simple. But it's also really fun.

We don't know why the robots want to wipe this sad last human off the face of the planet, but they do, and, frankly, as a human yourself, that should be enough for you. With really fantastic animations, your shadowy protagonist will leap to avoid certain death, all while trying to collect machine parts that he can use to upgrade his abilities.

For the duration, he'll be taunted/guided by a GLaDOS-esque support system that wants nothing more than his quick, painful death.

As we said, it's a simple concept. But much like Castle Crashers, it bolts on some more contemporary concepts to its classic core for an experience that we think you'll really enjoy.

Kotaku - Sunday Timewaster: HDOS Databank request 01 [Hot Flashes]

This is a fun little remake (more or less) of the puzzle mode of Tetris Attack; you have a limited number of moves to swap blocks and clear the whole board. While the early levels are pretty easy, some of the later stages get pretty complicated -- all in all, not a bad little browser-based timewaster to kill some time on a Sunday.

Kotaku - Artistic Saturday Timewaster: Estamos Pensando [Hot Flashes]

Kotakuite Daniel Novais sent me an email this past week, asking me to take a look at his "little short artsy game" called Estamos Pensando (Portuguese for 'We Are Thinking'). Inspired in part by Jason Rohrer's Passage, Estamos Pensando is a sweet, sad, and polished little game. Daniel said that he's now trying to work on something a little happier, since one comment on Rohrer's Gravitation noted that these 'artsy' games are usually depressing. There are Portuguese and English versions of the game, and gameplay is quite simple. The game has apparently gotten some nice initial reviews since its submission to the Brazilian symposium SBGames 2008 festival, and it's worth a little bit of your time.

Kotaku - Governor Sarah Palin Is Air Milf [Hot Flashes]

With the election proper only a day away, gamers' thoughts naturally turn to one thing - video games featuring Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Comedy Central has us covered with Air Milf, an action-filled shooter in which the Governor of Alaska takes out wolves from a helicopter with a high-powered rifle. The key to success lies in stringing together headshots, with the point value rising with each successful kill. While the creators earn points for the dramatic musical score, they lose said points immediately after due to not having the actual Airwolf theme.

And please, don't take this post as me endorsing one candidate or the other. As far as I am concerned, Cobra had the right idea with Serpentor.

Kotaku - Suicide Bombing Game Too Dull To Be Truly Offensive [Hot Flashes]

Aw, bless. This one really tried to be offensive but it comes across like a three year old try to get a rise out of his grandparents by shouting "POO!" in public.

The tabloid press are predictably irate about this 'game' that casts you as a suicide bomber bent on claiming as many innocent lives as possible and indeed in more competent hands this might be worth getting all worked up about. The developer's comments on flash portal Newgrounds are rather telling, though:
"IF YOU'VE SEEN OR READ ANYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME LATELY PLEASE E-MAIL ME ABOUT IT. MOST OF THE TIME I AM UNAWARE OF WHO'S BITCHING ABOUT IT."

Let's not. Instead, just hope that he never has to suffer the kind of loss that his game makes light of. You'll feel better in the long run and he will go away that much faster.

Kotaku - Political Platforming In Super Obama World [Hot Flashes]

Still buzzing after the Election '08 celebrations/commiserations? The nice thing about this topical SuperMario clone is the way it reaches out to appeal to both Red and Blue states.

Obama supporters can guide the new POTUS-elect on to another stunning victory - this time against Pigs (Pork barrel politics! Do you see what they did there?) and money bag toting lobbyists. McCain supporters can settle for repeatedly plunging the Prez off an Alaskan ice shelf.

The makers promise that Arizona, Illinois, and D.C. levels will be added soon. The Alaskan maps on offer did provide one moment of authentic Biting Satire - a several screens long Bridge to Nowhere that ends in an impassible barrier. Nice touch.

Kotaku - 99 Bricks Is The Addictive Spawn Of Tetris, World of Goo [Hot Flashes]

When you're done playing Super Obama World, make sure you try out the latest from Weirdbeard Games, a mash up of Tetris and the excellent World of Goo known as 99 Bricks.

The concept is simple: stack a series of 99 tetriminos to build the highest possible tower, taking into account the physics of building such a structure from Tetris blocks. Fortunately for your quest for height, a completed line does not delete it, as it would in Alexey Pajitnov's classic puzzle game.

It may be more of a challenge than you'd think. It definitely requires some patience to burn through nearly a hundred blocks, but it's so well designed, it's worth the Flash time.

Kotaku - Sunday Timewaster: the irRegular Game of Life [Hot Flashes]

The irRegular Game of Life is a weird but fun little game (by irRegular Games) based on mathematician John Horton Conway's 'Game of Life' theory. In this iteration, you are given puzzles to solve and must set the little cells into motion to meet the goals of each level. It's surprisingly hypnotic at times -- after getting past the initial introductory levels, you watch the cells shuffle back and forth, creating a variety of patterns and interacting with each other. There's also a sandbox mode and some other features; the regular puzzle mode was plenty fun for me.

Kotaku - QWOP: Why Rag Dolls Will Never Take Home The Gold [Hot Flashes]

Anyone looking for a frustrating yet occasionally hilarious Flash game to while away their Tuesday evening? Try QWOP, named so for its simple control scheme using the Q, W, O and P keys on your keyboard. Those four keys control the thighs and calves of "our small nation's sole representative at the Olympic Games." It quickly becomes clear why no games have ever employed this control scheme for running purposes before. My personal best was a nation shaming 10 meters, at which point Qwop landed face first, snapping his right leg in half. Everyone is a winner!

Kotaku - The Official 2D Mirror's Edge Is 2Awesome [Hot Flashes]

Mirror's Edge 2D should be pretty self-explanatory. Despite dropping a D, the Flash-based sidescrolling experience is still pretty deep. Sure, it's not as cute as that LittleBigPlanet-built take on Mirror's Edge, but it is a helluva lot more accurate. Built by Borne Games, aka Brad Borne, creator of Fancy Pants Adventures, Mirror's Edge 2D is still in beta, but EA reps tell us that the full version is expected to launch in two to three weeks.

The full version will include fanciness like leaderboards and a version that doesn't have the "beta" concession. We'd suggest trying it out if you're still on the fence about the full game. It's gorgeously animated and much easier on the motion-sick prone.

Kotaku - Sunday Timewaster: Robo-Evolution [Hot Flashes]

From SKT comes a bizarrely addictive little game called Robo-Evolution. It's very short, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about evolving a panko-breaded shrimp (or an egg, or lips) into a scuttling little robot. There are various powerups you need to collect so you can leap over the walls and complete the game; some powerups simply give you stats, while others will also add to your appearance.

Kotaku - Cooking Mama Kills Animals - Happy Thanksgiving From PETA [Hot Flashes]

It's Thanksgiving time here in America, and you know what that means - millions of dead turkeys! Delicious dead turkeys, mind you, but the folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) don't appreciate that at all, and once more they dig out an iconic video game character to try and get their message across. Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals is actually not a bad flash version of Majesco's cooking franchise for the Wii and DS. It's just a bit twisted. Behead, gut, and stuff a turkey while attempting to get the coveted "Even Meaner Than Mama" score.

Don't fret though, Mama fans. There's redemption in store for the titular hero, and by the end of the game it's all turkeys and rainbows for our tiny, sexual stereotype.

Kotaku - Give LocoRoco 2 A Try In Your Browser [Hot Flashes]

If the thought of waiting until next week (or until some as-yet undetermined date, if you are in North America) for LocoRoco 2 is making you feel all wobbly, help is at hand.

Until November 21st, the self-explanatory Games.co.uk is hosting an 'official minigame' demo with a selection of levels for you to ooze and flop around.

All the usual LocoRoco oddness is present and correct - if you are not humming the 'You've got some musical notes' theme after five minutes you have a stronger will than I.

Joystiq - The Joystiq Free Game Club: Buggle Stars

We already told you about the Casual Collective's hyper-addictive Desktop Tower Defense iteration, but this week we've been swept away by another one of their confections: Buggle Stars, a platformer with an adorable shell to hide its difficulty.

You're a little buggle who wants nothing more than to collect all the stars in each stage of his world as quickly as possible. The faster you grab them (while simultaneously avoiding spikes and other hazards), the higher your score. It sounds easy enough, and it is. At first.

Before long, you'll realize that there's a "right" way to sail through each level, and if you're ... well, let's say a particular sort of person, you'll find it tough to resist the siren song of the perfect run.

Graphically it's simplicity itself, but we have to give a little love to the music, which is just charming enough to keep your fist out of your monitor when things get tough.

Give it a try and let us know what you think. The Joystiq Free Game Club: Buggle Stars originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 12:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Kotaku - Doom Finally Ported To Flash [Hot Flashes]

What hasn't Doom been ported to at this point? You can't answer "Flash 10!" anymore, as an enterprising Newgrounds contributor has gone to the effort to port the id Software classic to Adobe's platform, making the first-person shooter playable in the web browser of your choice. It's a tidy little port, if a bit slow on my 2 year old MacBook Pro.

Sound is a little wonky -- there's no music either -- but we can't lodge complaints against this version of Doom. If you've never powered through the thing, here's just one more option for the pile. It's as promised. Doom. Flash. Playable.

Kotaku - Sunday Timewaster: Guess All the Consoles Released [Hot Flashes]

Believe it or not, 68 consoles/portables have been released in the United States since the Magnavox Odyssey first came out in 1972. This flash game asks you to name as many as you can in 12 minutes. I only got 31 and thought I was doing well. You don't have to guess in order, and correctly spelled answers (or in some cases, their abbreviations) will automatically appear in the list. I'm putting this to you guys not only as a throw-down-the-gauntlet challenge, but also if the quiz creator missed any, or improperly listed one or more, you'll pick it all apart. Because after getting fewer than 50 percent, I need to feel better about myself, and the only way to do that is to question this quiz's credibility. (Kidding.) So you have at least one hint, let's see what you can do with the rest.

Kotaku - Auditorium: The Prettiest Musical Puzzle Game You'll Play Today [Hot Flashe

Sometimes we like our Hot Flashes to soothe us, rather than stir us into a reflexes-required panic. In fact, after playing Auditorium, the musical puzzle... experience, I've poured myself a strong cup of adult-style eggnog.

You too may want to wash away the day with hard liquor and be delighted by what Auditorium has to offer. Its creators describe the Flash game as a "process of discovery and play." It's one of those titles where outlining how it plays spoils some of the fun -- figure it out on your own.

The Auditorium site teases that the developers may be convinced to port it to the iPhone or consoles, given the right encouragement and, of course, proper amount of funds via donation. We'll see.

Kotaku - I Made This. You Play This. We Are Enemies [Hot Flashes]

There are times when just the unvarnished title of a game will make a good headline for a blog post and this is one of those times.

I Made This.. is the kind of platform game that you play inside your head while hopped up on over-the-counter cough remedies during a 3-day fever. It's like someone tried to make schizophrenia into a flash game and is just the right side of incomprehensible. As the 'instructions' say, "Remember, 'figuring out' is for control centred hedonists and sharks with bees for hair."

Guide your... round thing around levels seemingly constructed from printouts of popular web pages (YouTube, Google, Yahoo! and Fark all get a look in - no Kotaku so far, though) that have been cut up, glued together in a twisted collage and scrawled over in ballpoint pen. As you move to the various 'goal' sprites to progress you will trigger alarming popups, Burroughsian cut-up poetry and flashing slogans. It's curiously compelling - I'm even starting to worry that there might be a plot.
