Microsoft Most powerful console available. The Xbox is doing well on its homecourt, but on the road sales aren't dominating.

Quote:
First is family sharing, this feature is near and dear to me and I truly felt it would have helped the industry grow and make both gamers and developers happy.  The premise is simple and elegant, when you buy your games for Xbox One, you can set any of them to be part of your shared library.  Anyone who you deem to be family had access to these games regardless of where they are in the world.  There was never any catch to that, they didn't have to share the same billing address or physical address it could be anyone.  When your family member accesses any of your games, they're placed into a special demo mode. This demo mode in most cases would be the full game with a 15-45 minute timer and in some cases an hour.  This allowed the person to play the game, get familiar with it then make a purchase if they wanted to.  When the time limit was up they would automatically be prompted to the Marketplace so that they may order it if liked the game.  We were toying around with a limit on the number of times members could access the shared game (as to discourage gamers from simply beating the game by doing multiple playthroughs). but we had not settled on an appropriate way of handling it.  One thing we knew is that we wanted the experience to be seamless for both the person sharing and the family member benefiting.  There weren't many models of this system already in the wild other than Sony's horrendous game sharing implementation, but it was clear their approach (if one could call it that) was not the way to go.  Developers complained about the lost sales and gamers complained about overbearing DRM that punished those who didn't share that implemented by publishers to quell gamers from taking advantage of a poorly thought out system.  We wanted our family sharing plan to be something that was talked about and genuinely enjoyed by the masses as a way of inciting gamers to try new games

If this is true that would of been great

"demo mode" eh?

Guess the proponents didn't catch that little tidbit of info.

Lame - turns out this ballyhooed feature (family plan) was much to do about nothing.

Seems like Microsoft was being deceptive by failing to mention this family share bullshit was just for "demo-mode," although I think anyone who assumed it equaled an unrestricted shared gaming library was being a little bit naive... Largely because this is Microsoft we're talking about.

Microsoft can still do those features. They just don't want to due to sour grapes.

Want to prove that your plan was best? Enable those features for digital-only purchases. Let the consumers choose if they want the physical media, or the benefits that come with the digital purchase. Oh, and have those Steam-like sales, even if it does piss off the retailers. I mean, you were going to do it anyway, right?

Fact is, they are only dumping these features, as I said, due to sour grapes. Microsoft just took their ball and went home.

So do I. Why did people think that MS would implement a system that allowed up to 10 people unfettered access to a game, when only one person had paid for it?!

MS was smart to back down. They never made it clear what consumers would benefit from their plans, it seemed that if anything, buyers would have less freedom, less choices, less options. Can't check in every 24 hours? Well buy our old console instead! Are you fucking kidding me?

Can you imagine the butthurt that would have occurred had MS managed to continue to leave out any mention that sharing was just demo mode? I mean, it would have been rightful butthurt, but butthurt none the less.

Funny how they kept mum on that point until now. "You made us take away SUCH a great sharing system." GTFOOHWTBS.

It would have been lame, but turns out, It was full game, not a 15 min to hour trial for family members. Like the guy says, Can't believe everything you read on the internet.

So sad they took it out. Ah well, moving on.

Here is the story about it being full game not TRIAL.

Interesting... but they could say anything now that family plan isn't included in the current feature set for the console.

I dont know either way, I think it had been explained several times that it was a full game, then some guy comes out and says its a 45min demo.... nah..

can you imagine the backlash to that would have been especially since they have always said it was full game access. .

either way dont matter now, its gone..

"Don't believe everything you read on the Internet" - A guy on the Internet

I bet it was publisher controlled whether it was the full game or just a time limited demo. It doesn't make financial sense that a single purchase would be able to be shared among 10 various people (not same household, not even related). You think publishers are upset about the used game market? This sort of system would be much worse for their bottom line.

No, everyone isn't. I doubt most even knows that there's a new system coming out soon. We're hardocore video gamers, most gamers aren't though. Every single day average Joes come into our shop and see my 360 and start talking a little about games and most of them have no idea a new Xbox is coming out this year, and the ones who do know know nothing about any of its features. I'd wager after what, 7 or 8 years, that half don't know about most of the features of the 360 still (or care).

We'll probably see a $400 model in time for launch now that it doesn't require Kinect. Microsoft sure is doing a lot of 180s, but hey they are listening to the consumers and the product is getting better and better as we get closer to launch.

It's certainly plausible now, however, I forget where I read that they don't want to split the market with this console. Developers don't want to have to do Kinect and non-Kinect versions of their games.

Its only getting better in the context that they were colossally stupid to begin with. All they are really doing is getting rid of the things they shouldnt have included to start with. It not getting better as much as its no longer dumb.

The fact that they even proposed said ideas does not inspire confidence.

And heres a question...Kinect came out 2-3 years ago. Is there ANY game that justifies the accessory? My ex bought me one and I think I have used it 3 times total.

Yeah I read that too. They don't want to split the market because they believe so strongly in the Kinect. They didn't want to give developers an excuse to "limit" themselves.

Although they said this around the same time they were being really arrogant, refusing to change anything, and making fun of gamers who disliked their model. They've certainly changed their tune now.
