2014 Winter Olympics

So, is anybody else following the Olympics in Sochi? I mean the actual competitions, not the just the crazy photos and tweets from athletes and journalists, detailing just how hilarious (and in many cases, horrible) various things are.

Personally, I like watching snowboarding and hockey, but if I'm near a television I'll catch whatever is going on.

Shaun White, looking to become the first U.S. olympian to get three consecutive gold medals, in one event, failed to reach the podium. He just came in 4th, in Men's Halfpipe.

The Olympics suck. A bunch of shitty sports nobody will even think twice about for the next 3.99 years once they are over. The only thing that could make the games even remotely interesting is a terrorist attack. So I'm rooting for a successful major attack.

I just don't want terrorists to kill any of the hockey players and I hope none of them come back with pink eye. Except Crosby.

Looks like Shani Davis also failed to make history, in becoming the first speed skater to win three consecutive golds in the same event. He finished 8th in the 1,000 meters.

I didn't get to see the game, but from what I'm told some Latvian goalie almost single handily beat the Canadian men's hockey team.

Team USA vs Canada in the semi-finals.

Dude that game was nuts.

Not quite as epic as that USA-Russia game, but it was good.

I'm really stoked about the final four. Great matchups. I really dont think the Canadians sucked today either, Latvia just played their ass off. I mean shit, Canada had like 57 shots on goal too. USA has a tough matchup with them.

Exactly. The guy was just in beast mode. I guess he was drafted by the Lightning in 2013. It'll be interesting to see where his career goes from here, as he's only 21 years old.

Yeah the score doesnt really show what happened in the game. The Canadians dominated, they just ran into an unconscious goalie.

The U.S. is currently leading in total medal count, with 23 (7 gold, 5 silver, 11 bronze). Russia and the Netherlands are in 2nd and 3rd. However, both Norway and Germany have more golds than the U.S. (9 and 8 respectively).

Nobody cares about the medal count. Its all about golds, Jerry. GOLDS!

Unless something crazy happens looks like the US is going to win the Gold in womens hockey. They are up 2-0 with 7 min left.

HOLY SHIT! Canada just tied it with like 50 seconds left after the US hit the post on an empty net. Crazy finish. OT coming up.

Unbelievable end to that game. The US was inches short of putting the game away too, with that shot on the empty net! Although if that ref didn't get in the way, that shot never happens.

I don't know many people, if any, that only look at golds. It is equally asinine to only looking at total medal count.

Thats how the official Olympic medal standings work. It goes in order of Golds won. Always has.

http://www.sochi2014.com/en/medals

Quote:
The Olympic medal table is a method of sorting the medal placements of countries in the modern-day Olympics and Paralympics. Officially, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not recognize a ranking of participating countries at the Olympic Games.[1] Nevertheless, the IOC does publish medal tables for information purposes, showing the total number of Olympic medals earned by athletes representing each country's respective National Olympic Committee.[2] The convention used by the IOC is to sort by the number of gold medals the athletes from a country have earned. In the event of a tie in the number of gold medals, the number of silver medals is taken into consideration, and then the number of bronze medals. If two countries have an equal number of gold, silver, and bronze medals, they are ordered in the table alphabetically by their IOC country code.

You bolded the wrong part.

Quote:
Officially, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not recognize a ranking of participating countries at the Olympic Games.
In fact, according to the Olympic Charter the games are competitions between athletes in individual or team events and NOT countries.

http://www.olympic.org/Documents/olympic_charter_en.pdf

Quote:
The Olympic Games are competitions between athletes in individual or team events and not between countries. They bring together the athletes selected by their respective NOCs, whose entries have been accepted by the IOC. They compete under the technical direction of the IFs concerned.
Keeping track of a medal table is nothing more than a way to add more interest; even if it is unofficial. It is easier for people to get behind their country than an individual athlete. Keeping track of only gold medals is silly, as is keeping track of only total medal count. A country that wins one gold medal is not superior to a country that wins 25 silver medals. A country that wins 10 bronze medals is not superior to a country that wins 5 gold medals.

This argument comes up every Olympic Games. People bicker over which country "wins". If you want a truly objective medal table it would award points for each medal. Ex: 5 for gold, 3 for silver, and 1 for bronze. This system accounts for winners as well as overall depth and at the same time makes a gold more important than a combined silver and bronze. This is all just for fun and games of course since a country cannot "win" the Olympics.

The Canadian men's hockey team just beat Team USA 1-0, and will now face Sweden for the gold medal. The US will play Finland for the bronze.

I honestly wish some of these sports got more TV time during the off years. Watching the Olympics has made me want to get back into cross country skiing, and I would love to see short track speed skating on tv more often. That sport is great.

My alma-mater is a US Olympic Training Site, and would host short track speed skating events. Unfortunately a couple years ago they suspended it because they skate on the same ice as the college hockey team, and the boards are permanent. Although they put pads in place, they now consider it unsafe for the speeds they are going. It's a shame because it is pretty amazing to watch. I remember Apolo Ohno competed in a couple of the events.

Speaking of speed skating...

Quote:
With two more defeats Friday, the U.S. speed skaters completed a stunning flop on the sport's biggest stage, assuring their first medal shutout since 1984

When asked to put it all in perspective, Davis broke out his imitation of Comic Book Guy from the animated television show "The Simpsons."

"Worst Olympics ever," Davis said.

For Canada there have been some cool stories over the Olympics, like the speed skater who gave up his spot in the finals because a more experienced Canadian was next in line to make it, and then Denny Morrison went and won the bronze after having the spot given to him. And it was pretty cool when the coach for the cross country team (I went to college with his wife Becky Scott) ran down the course when a Russian skiier had a broken ski and was trying to finish, and swapped out his ski for him with an extra the Canadians had.
