Dragon's Dogma - Capcom's Skyrim

Capcom's take on the western RPG genre is here, and so far the reviews are looking mixed. Seems like a very love/hate game. I should have it today, I'll give it some playtime this week.

Reviews:
  • Game Revolution - 9 - "The level design and unforgettable bosses surpass even that of Skyrim."

  • GameTrailers - 8.7 - "If you're the kind of player that can get completely lost in these sorts of open world RPGs, you're going to eat Dragon's Dogma alive. "

  • Machinima -8.5 - "Dragon's Dogma is the ballsiest, most ambitious thing Capcom has attempted in years."

  • G4TV - 4 out of 5 - "This is one of those promising rough-around-the-edges experiences where you can't help but want a sequel even before your first playthrough is complete. "

  • EuroGamer - 8 - "Dragon's Dogma is a great fantasy game, where the lack of a multiplayer experience is compensated from an impressive single player. The Pawn's IA works great and if you're looking for an epic experience, this Capcom game is your best option right now. Pity for the long loading times and some frame rate drops that prevent the game from reaching higher scores. "

  • Destructoid - 7.5 - "Just grit your teeth, fight through the pain, and the rewards are there. "

  • OXM - 6 - "Much like the main character's chest cavity, this RPG ultimately feels hollow, with no real heart."

  • Joystiq - 2 out of 5 - "Any brief flickers of fun I came across were consistently extinguished by the game's oppressive flaws."

I'm enjoying Dogma much more than I was expecting. The story is pretty much throw away, but the combat, and boss battles are a complete blast.

Can't wait to play it so more.

Much better than Skyrim

if you play RPGs for their combat, and leveling, and don't care about the story. You have to play this game, it's a blast...

So there's expanded content, but it's not available as DLC. You have to buy the whole game (possibly again).

Good job, Capcom.

This is why I never buy new games.

It is 40 bucks for the entire original game plus the new stuff. Season pass DLC nonsense is 30 dollars most of the time. Just like the olden days of expansion packs. This is one time that Capcom isn't trying to destroy their customers. Kinda.

Did they include online co-op?

I will pass. Seems to me that they need to team up with the Skyrim peeps for the ultimate experience.

You really shouldn't pass on this game. It plays much better than pretty much any action RPG out there.

Keep Bethesda away.

This has been one of my favorite games in the last two years.

Well, I finally finished my MBA and Skyrim (well, soon), and now I get to buy games again.

I purchased this one today. Can't wait to play it!

Surprisingly fun and addictive game. Not nearly as punishing as Dark Souls, but you can still easily get worked if you don't play right. I need to finish this.

This game is a lot of fun. Combine the boss battles and zero loading from this game with just about everything else from Kingdoms of Amalur, and you've got a badass game. Oh, and the lantern. Genius. One of my biggest gripes with Elder Scrolls games is that some form of light spell or torch is more or less mandatory, and they never felt the need to not be annoying about it. Seriously, light spells should start out lasting 10 minutes.

I appreciate the random badass monster that prowls around the woods at night, waiting for some dummy to happen across it. And it's even better when you beat that monster that ambushed you.

I'm playing an archer type right now, just like I do in every action RPG of this type. I wish there was a way to hotkey more abilities, like Ratchet and Clank. Exactly like that, actually.
