I can't believe what I read today at http://www.computerandvideogames.com

Fighting and hospitalisations marred this weekend's launch of PlayStation 2 in Europe, and auctions and black marketeers are having a field day. Hit this
Mayhem hit Paris on Friday as Sony performed the largest, most understated console launch ever seen in Europe. The UK pre-order scheme appeared to pay off for the company, with mainstream TV and print media reporting that it simply wasn't possible to get hold of one of the initial 80,000 PlayStation 2s if no pre-order form was held. The French launch wasn't quite as easy going.

Near-riots ensued in the French capital and three people – reportedly in their late teens - were hospitalised in the crush to be the first to grab the next generation hardware. Thousands of prospective customers crammed Parisian stores, eager to nab one of the 70,000 machines available in the country, a situation compounded by 20,000 consoles being sold outside of the French pre-order system. Violence erupted as the deadline for launch passed. The shots below were taken from a Virgin MegaStore in Paris.

Auction sites across Europe pushed hysteria further over the weekend, with www.ebay.co.uk (http://www.ebay.co.uk) housing plenty of opportunities to get your hands on a PAL PlayStation 2 for around £500. Reports in the UK press claimed machines were swapping hands for an astronomical £1,000 on the black market in the hours following launch.

British retailers are now gearing up for the inevitable wave of second hand console in the coming weeks, with the Computer Exchange anticipating a price of £350 to £450 for the box alone.

Prices are expected to remain high well into next year, as the rest of the 165,000 UK allocation enters the country before Christmas.

Now if that isn't extreme, I don't know what is.
..... but I'm not one to moan!

Let's see how many of those are defective...
This is to be expected, Sony became desperate when Sega jumped with a nicely designed console. They accelerated their plans to create all the hype and not lose the lead, now they are paying. There are bound to be a lot of pissed customers out there.

If Sony is not careful this could turn out to be like what happened to the N64. A lot of people bought into it, then jumped ship after the hype died down.

I can only feel sorry for all the Sony engineers in charge of increasing production.

Everytime I TRY to play Madden 2001 on my PS2, I just wanna punch all the people who want one(in the arm http://www.consolecity.com/forum/smile.gif). This machine does NOT live up to the hype. SSX shows that it can do impressive things, but there isnt alot that PS2 is doing that DC isnt. I have more movies for my PS2 than I do games. Wait awhile!! Please!
