View Full Version : Will the PS2 version of RE:CV look better than DC's?

I gotta say no. I dont think anyone has really figured out how to churn out quality textures on PS2. Capcom opened the DC up graphics wise when RE:CV came out for DC. I dont think anyone really knows what the hell they are doing with the PS2 other than EA. Also, there was an interview with the creator of RE and he said that RE:CV wouldnt look as good on PS2 as it on DC. Thoughts, flames, opinions??

this should actually be pretty interesting. it will provide a good comparison of what each system is currently capable of. And if the DC version looks better, sony fans will never hear the end of it http://www.consolecity.com/forum/smile.gif

I have read in a few gaming mags and on many sites that A Capcom representative (or whatever) said that the Resident Evil 4 game that is in current production is having major problems and setbacks and that it doesnt even look as good as the original RE:Code Veronica. The same resources (mags and websites) have reported that some game companies are claiming that SONY DID NOT COME THROUGH WITH THE AWESOME SYSTEM THAT THEY PROMISED THEM. I know IM not the only one who has seen these comments and reports. Anyway, my opinion is this: No the ps2 version will not be better than the DREAMCAST version. The ps2 game will probably have more detail (clothing, backgrounds, etc) but that wil be it. The Dreamcast version will DEFINITELY look much smoother and might not load as much...do to the 4 megabytes of v-ram that the DC has over the puny 2 megabytes that the ps2 has. LATER GAMERS!!!!

McFly? McFly? Anyone home?? The PS2 has 4, count them, 4 megs of VRAM. The DC has 8, yes 8, not 4, megs of VRAM.

The texture issue is a little more clouded then that. The DC has 8 meg with JPEG compression/decompression...so it's a helluva lot more then 8 meg (the I can't remember the ratio...I think its 3:1 (?) making it seem like 24 megs of uncompressed VRAM).

The PS2 has 4mb of VRAM. No compression. That's just 4. The machine can quickly shunt textures from the main memory into vram, but developers haven't been able to do this accurately.

I remember seeing an interview with Capcom and they stated that RE:CV could not be recreated on the PS2 due to it's texture limitations.

If they can't make it look better they will just add more things and refine the hell out of it.

Let's see:
- Change "de Caprio's" hairstyle so we don't get sued.
- Try to add more story with Wesker...
- With the new hairstyle now the "love" story doesn't seem that weird...

I saw PS2 screenshots over at Gamespot... they were small, but looked like ass.

Let's wait and see though.

For the record, im still sticking with my original, 4 month old theory that everyone in this forum pulls all their tech and sales numbers strait outta their asses. Why? because the change from week to week. Besides, numbers dont count. Its efficiency... how the resources are used. And the DC has proved itself time and time again to be a simple platform to program for, so therefore its resources can be more efficiently used.

IMO.

Yes, it will look better. If they won't then Capcom did a crappy ass job on porting it.

LOL!

Capcom has released more screens of RECVC for DC than PS2. Magic Box has some pics of the game. RECVC will not be purchased twice by most people so it probably won't do that well in America; Capcom just wants to see where the RE fans went (I doubt it if they flocked to the Piss Twice; sales for RE have dropped as more installments came out) and Biohazard 0 for Game Cube fell off the Top 10 Most Wanted ever since it was announced for GC.

JPEG cpmpression? Uh...no.

The DC has two texture compression schemes. Under WinCE it uses DX texture compression, the same found on all DX platforms such as Windows and X-Box. This offers a 6:1 compression ratio.

Under Sega's OS, they use the texture compression found in the PowerVRDC's native API, PowerSGL. It offers an 8:1 compression ratio, much like S3TC (S3 Texture Compression, also used in GameCube).

While the PS2 has only 4MB VRAM, it can still compress textures in system memory.however, those have to be decompressed before being displayed on screen, so the Ps2 can only display 2MB of textures on screen, since 2Mb of the 4MB VRAM is used to draw the scrren. The same coldbe said about DC. It uses 2Mb to draw the screen, leaving 6Mb for textures (36MB for WinCE games nd 48Mb for native API games with compression).

And no, i didnt pull that outta my ass. this is based on specs and facts about S3's chipsets, NEC's chipsets, and Windows/DirectX APIs.

You know this brings to mind a quote I read from the creator of Metal Gear Solid 2. Stateing that the potential of the PS2 would never be reached because of the limited VRAM. Sony has been quick to cover this up, but let's face fact's, DOA2 Hardcore at best looks as good as the DC version but not better and in some areas it looks worse. You have to wonder why Sony only included 4 meg's, Why not 8? It wouldn't have cost that much more.

I think it will look better,if Capcom takes there time and doesnt rush the port. I just picked up the game last weekend, and I think that it could look a little better on the ps2. IF you noticed there is some carefully placed fog in alot of places, and some texturs are quiet blurry up close. But will I buy it? No, I already have one version of the game why pay $50 for the same thing with a few extras.

btw, I'd like to point out that any RE CV pics on the PlayStation 2 posted NOW would be bogus. They'd have to be screenns of the Dreamcast version, because Capcom themselves have said the PS2 version is still too early in development.

Speaking of DOA, i saw the PS2 version running on a 19" TV at FRY's, and let me tell you, this game looks like a steamy, nutty, brown, heaping pile of stinking shit. Needless to say next to it there was a DC version running on a 19" monitor and it made the nausea a little less irritating.
I'm starting to become veeery skeptical about my PS2 purchase.

You really gotta love frys for putting the ps2 on a shitty ass tv and then putting the dc on a computer monitor. I belive they are trying to sell there dreamcasts since the ps2's are so rare.

Shiit, wouldn't you? They're in it to make money, and so far the PS2 is not making retailers much of a profit since they make very little profit from console sales.
BW, i'm sure they would have hooked a PS2 to a monitor as well, if it had a VGA adapter.

It's a moot point, since DOA 2 looks like crap on a monitor. Jaggy heaven.

However, DOA 2 (DC) looks great on a TV. Believe you me, I've played it on both.

Say what! DOA looked waay better on a monitor than it does on my 32" and my 27". The whole "jaggies" issues (even on PS2) are blown waay out of porportion.

DoA2 on the PS2 sports slighty less detailed textures on some areas, just look around and you will notice them.

DoA2 on th DC looks better on a monitor HANDS DOWN. Sure, its more defined (that's why you will see jaggies), but you can really appreciate the detail only a monitor can bring out.

NOW, if you can see jaggies on a TV with a PS2... suddenly the real reason why a PS2 VGA adapter is not available becomes obvious... AA helps, but I can't help but wonder how the game would look in a monitor... why is Sony stalling...

Heh heh...Exodus, nobody's accusing you of pulling anything out of your ass (yeech!).

Don't know where I read about JPEG compression.(??) Took it for granted that that was a correct statement. Heh heh..Jpeg compression would be mighty useless for a 3d system upon further inspection of it's functions. Waay too inefficient for hardware to waste it's clock cycles on.

The Texture compression format that you're thinking about is called Vector Quantization. Yes it's supported in PowerSGL, but that's a Videologic System Dev Kit. Sega's own SDK is called Dragon. VQ's most effiecient compression ratio is a reported 10:1. http://www.consolecity.com/forum/smile.gif

Sega was even recommending PowerSGL be used on PCs before DC devkits were made available, due to the reported ease of PowerSGL to Dragon code conversion...so I imagine VQ compression is fully supported by Sega's own SDK.

PowerSGL is the main graphics API in Dragon, like DX is in WinCE.

BTW, thanks for the compression correction, 10:1 it is. I got GC and DC confused at sme point, and started assuming DC was 8:1 also.

While it supports 10:1, usually 3:1 is used, as it is god enough ratio for games at this point, and shows no loss in visual quality. Textures look washed out at 10:1.
