Sega Managerial Meeting: The Full Report

Sega addresses Networking plans and cross platform support.

November 15, 2000

Sega held a management briefing in Tokyo on 11/15 to clarify (once again) the company's new management direction. At the briefing, representatives commented on the company's new focus on networking, and made an attempt at clarifying cross-platform development issues.
As previously mentioned, Sega's management is shifting focus to various areas of networking. At the meeting, representative vice president Hideki Satou restated that the company has a one to one and a half year lead on the competition in the area of networking, and reaffirmed earlier statements that the company would become the world's number one network games provider.

This area doesn't just include playing games Online. Sega's Network Service Group revealed a new network business plan through which it hopes to expand network-based events and Online sales. It was mentioned that Eternal Arcadia sold around 200,000 copies through standard means, along with an additional 70,000 copies Online. Sega also stated that it sold 30,000 units of its Online mini-game title Guru Guru Onsen at a network event.

The company plans on working with various partners in networking so that it can expand its reach, providing game contents and networking services for its own customers, as well as services for customers of its partners. We don't have any specifics at this point.

Regarding all those reports of cross platform development, Mr. Saito stated that Sega is not developing for other manufacturers' hardware right now. The company is, however, examining the characteristics of other hardware and their user bases. Why? We're not entirely sure. But the pessimism.ign.com train of thought would be that Sega is trying to figure out why other consoles sell so well while Dreamcast doesn't.

Sega also spoke about playing Dreamcast games on your PC. Be sure and check out our separate story on the matter here.
